Gynecomastia Surgery in Glastonbury, CT

Dr. Beam offers Gynecomastia Surgery, also known as male breast reduction, for patients in Hartford, Glastonbury, New Britain, New Haven and surrounding areas of Connecticut.

Gynecomastia is a condition that affects millions of men and is characterized by the development of excess glandular tissue in the breast area. In adolescent boys, this condition is relatively common and typically resolves by itself. For those whom the condition remains a more permanent concern, however, gynecomastia can cause the development of body image issues and feelings of low self esteem. For these men, male breast reduction may provide a solution. Technically known as reduction mammaplasty, male breast reduction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin to produce a firmer, flatter, more masculine chest contour.

At our Hartford-area cosmetic surgery center, Dr. Beam spends time in consultation with each patient and tailors the surgery to give him the best results possible for his individual physique.

There are several different approaches to Gynecomastia surgery, depending on the severity and source of the gynecomastia. If the condition is primarily the result of an excess of fatty tissue, our Glastonbury cosmetic surgeon may elect to correct the problem primarily with a liposuction procedure. In this case, he would insert a small cannula, or thin hollow tube, through small incisions, loosening the fatty tissue so it may be suctioned and removed from the body.

On the other hand, if an excess of glandular tissue has caused the development of gynecomastia, Dr. Beam may use an excision technique. Dr. Beam can also reposition the nipple and reduce the areola, if sagging and enlargement have occurred as a result of the gynecomastia.

How Much Does Gynecomastia Surgery Cost?

The cost for Gynecomastia surgery is dependent on the patient’s case. Generally, insurance will not cover the cost of male breast reduction surgery. Dr. Beam and his staff can discuss all pricing and financing options with you at your initial consultation.

Gynecomastia FAQs

1. What is gynecomastia caused by?

Gynecomastia is the enlargement of male breast tissue or overdevelopment of breasts in men. Unfortunately, there is no single cause of gynecomastia. Gynecomastia can be caused by:

  • Changes in hormonal levels through puberty and andropause
  • Overuse of anabolic steroids
  • Abuse of alcohol and marijuana
  • Side effects from prescription medication
  • Genetics
  • An underlying illness

2. Is gynecomastia a serious problem?

Typically, gynecomastia does not pose any threat to the rest of your physical health. That being said, many men who struggle with gynecomastia find that they struggle with their mental health and self-confidence. For this reason, we encourage all of our male patients who have gynecomastia to consider treatment.

3. Can exercise reduce gynecomastia?

Because gynecomastia is the enlargement of breast tissue and breast glands, oftentimes patients cannot find relief from their gynecomastia at the gym with regular exercise. Instead, the excess breast tissue and enlarged breast glands must be removed from the chest via surgery. During this time, gentle liposuction may also be performed to enhance your results and give you the chiseled, flat chest you’ve been working hard towards.

4. Is gynecomastia permanent?

The presence of gynecomastia and how permanent it is depends on the individual and its underlying cause. Patients who have experienced the onset of gynecomastia as a result of genetics or hormonal imbalance may find that their gynecomastia may only be taken care of via surgery, while those who have acquired gynecomastia through lifestyle choices may be able to reverse its effects.

5. Is it worth getting gynecomastia surgery?

Yes, getting your gynecomastia taken care of with plastic surgery is worth it. Once the breast tissue causing the appearance of a puffy chest is removed, it is never replaced with new breast tissue. This means the results of your gynecomastia surgery will give you the flat, chiseled chest you desire for a lifetime. Patients generally find that their confidence is boosted and their mental health improves following their gynecomastia surgery.
