Glastonbury, CT Residents Want to Know: What’s the Difference Between Juvederm® Products?

Juvederm in Glastonbury, CTThe number of fillers on the market today can be overwhelming, especially with brands coming up with new products. Over the past several years, Juvederm® has released several new formulations to help achieve different cosmetic goals. With all the new names out there, it’s hard to know exactly which one is right for you. Let’s break down what makes each of them unique and how they should be used.

Making the Difference

Juvederm® has four main types of fillers: Juvederm® XC, Voluma®, Volbella® and Vollure™. Each one of these fillers does a different job. The question here is: What makes all the difference? The answer to that is in their chemical makeup.

Each of the formulas is made up of the same chemical composition of hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a naturally occurring sugar in the skin that keeps it looking plump, healthy and youthful. The difference in each of the products comes in the cross-linking of these HA molecules.

Cross-linking and Weight

The way these HA molecules are linked together and suspended in water to make the signature gel we see getting injected into our problem areas is exactly what makes the various fillers so different. HA can be bonded together in different ways and at different weights to produce a very specific outcome. For example, dermal fillers that cross-link heavier molecules tend to have a thicker formula than those that cross-link lighter molecules.

This all sounds very technical but think of it in the way of a pearl necklace. There’s really not much of a difference between a necklace made completely of small pearls and one made of a combination of small and large pearls, but they look different when worn on the body.

The Nitty Gritty

Now that we know the difference is in the weight of the HA molecules and how they’re bonded together, let’s break down how each Juvederm® product is formulated and what it’s best used for.

  • Juvederm® XC. This product is a fan favorite because of its flexibility to do multiple jobs. This product, which a mix of high and low weighted molecules cross-linked with one another, smooths out nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and smile lines.
  • Voluma™. This is the thickest and strongest gel of the four, which makes it ideal for deep injections into the cheek area to get a nice lift and boost of volume. Because it’s thick, it’s a little stiffer than Juvederm® XC and lasts a little longer – up to 18 months compared to up to 12.
  • Volbella®. Made from cross-linking the lighter weight HA molecules, Volbella® is the thinnest and most spreadable gel of the four. This makes it perfect for smoothing out fine lines around the mouth and filling out hollow areas underneath the eyes.
  • Vollure™. This, along with Juvederm® XC is the happy medium between durability and spreadability. A combination of different weighted molecules allows it to treat nasolabial folds while still allowing for natural facial expressions.

If you are interested in learning more about which product of the Juvederm® line is right for you, contact us today to schedule your one-on-one consultation with Dr. Beam and his team of nurse injectors.

5 Things Glastonbury Residents Can Do Right Now to Change How You Age

Change how you age in Glastonbury CTAging is inevitable. Whether you want it to happen or not, your body and skin are aging every second of every day. Taking steps to change how you age is something that you can begin right now. Ditching bad habits and adopting better lifestyle techniques is the easiest way to get on your way to a healthier and longer life.

Exercise More

Your body needs an influx of calories coming in and calories going out in order to maintain a healthy balance. This means that the number of calories that you consume through eating and drinking should be offset by the calories that you burn throughout the day. The biggest excuse that people provide when prompted with exercising is that they don’t have time. A brisk walk on your lunch break, a lap around your neighborhood after work, a few hand weights in the morning, or any other active moment of your day can add to your exercise total. Going to a powerlifting gym and performing strenuous exercises is not what is expected of every person. Monitoring your lifestyle habits and exercising regularly can lead you towards a longer life-span and a slowing in aging.

Eat a Better Diet

What you put into your body has a lot to do with how you age. The food you eat directly affects the way that your organs function and how your body ages. Eating a balanced and healthy diet can slow down the aging process and preserve your body for a longer lifespan.

Meditation/Healthy Mind Space

How you age has a lot to do with your awareness and your surroundings. Meditation can bring you in touch with those feelings and help you to achieve a mental balance. Paying attention to your actions and practicing quiet meditation can lead to a healthier lifestyle. This lifestyle can slow down the aging process and elongate your life.

Do More of What You’ve Always Wanted to Do

Holding on to the idea of “one day” can be frustrating. You say that one day you will travel to a certain place, or achieve a certain task, or resolve a certain conflict. Holding on to pending energy can affect how you age. Living in the moment and living for the “now” is important to your wellbeing.

Simplify Your Life

Overcomplicated lifestyles are tiring. By acquiring less, you desire less. Living a simple life is good for your mind and body. Being aware of your surrounding and detaching from the social media-fueled world that people live in can change how you age. Keeping clear intentions and leading a simple life can prolong your youthful years and better the path towards aging.

While it is good to live a realistic lifestyle, it is also normal and completely encouraged to treat yourself sometimes. Your body gets worn down and tired and sometimes you need a rejuvenating pick-me-up. Dr. Beam and his staff offer medical spa treatments for when you need a little boost in life. Contact us today to schedule your consultation or appointment. We want to help you age better.

What’s In A Nose? Glastonbury Plastic Surgeon Talks About Ethnicity and Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty in Glastonbury CTNearly everyone has heard the term, “nose job,” before. The question at hand is, “do you really know what goes into a nose job?” A nose job, medically referred at as a rhinoplasty, is complex in its strategic background and planning. One of the largest factors that affect the complexity of rhinoplasty is the ethnicity of the patient. Similar to how each patient is unique, every rhinoplasty is tailored to the patient’s individual needs.

How Does Ethnicity Affect Rhinoplasty?

When it comes to ethnicity, each ethnic group has specific traits that make rhinoplasty procedures unique. For example, patients want to improve their quality of breathing or smell, but they want to preserve the appearance of their heritage. This preservation may include wanting to keep a wide base, a bump in the ridge, a low tip, or a tip that is hooked or bulbous. These features help patients to feel more like their family and their ethnicity.

What are the Challenges of an Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

During ethnic rhinoplasties, it is important that the surgeon pays careful attention to the thickness of the skin. Varying skin thickness, texture, and appearance are all factors that affect rhinoplasty. The tissue under the skin and the appearance of the nose are features unique to each ethnic group.

What is the Difference Between Rhinoplasty and Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

While these two procedures have similar goals, to improve appearance and quality of breathing or smell, they are different in the approach that is taken to construct the exterior of the nose. The purpose of a traditional rhinoplasty is to contour and shape the nose tailored to the patient’s desire. The purpose of an ethnic rhinoplasty is to improve the quality of breathing or smell while maintaining the look of the patient’s ethnic heritage.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is the medical procedure that is performed to surgically fix the appearance or the functionality of a nose. This surgical technique can be used to help those who struggle with breathing due to a misshapen nose. Trauma to the nose may have altered the appearance or the structure of the nose. Many patients are also born with malformations that cannot be corrected until puberty is complete.

Who Can Benefit from Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is beneficial to both men and women. This procedure can treat issues such as a deviated septum, snoring, and difficulty breathing. The two main benefits of rhinoplasty are improved appearance and functionality.

Patients can benefit from this procedure by being able to achieve the look that they desire. Additionally, the incisions made during the procedure are so small that there is typically no scarring or visible signs of the procedure once the healing is complete.

What is the Cost of Rhinoplasty?

The cost of a rhinoplasty is unique to each patient. Every rhinoplasty procedure is different and requires a different amount of time and technique. Due to these factors, the cost can fluctuate from patient to patient. The cost will be discussed by Dr. Beam and his staff during a consultation. Because elective procedures are often not covered by medical insurance, we offer financing plans to help patients pay for the cost of their procedure.

If you are ready to take the steps towards an ethnic rhinoplasty, contact Dr. Beam or his nurse practitioners. He and his staff are happy to discuss treatment options with a personalized consultation.

Glastonbury Residents Ask: What is the Best Age for a Facelift?

Facelift in Glastonbury CTHave you been looking in the mirror wishing you could tighten and lift areas of your face? Do you dream of having youthful-looking skin again? A facelift may be right for you. Do you know when the best age to have a facelift is? Dr. Beam, a Glastonbury plastic surgeon, explains how a facelift can benefit each age group.

20-30’s

At this age of your life, a facelift is an option, but it is not recommended. When you’re in your 20’s or 30’s, you may begin to notice certain areas of your face that are not as youthful as they once were. This is not uncommon and it is unnecessary to rush into plastic surgery. Instead, dermal fillers/injectables, or Botox® and injectables may be a better option for you. If you want to plump your lips, fix your nose, or adjust small areas of your face, fillers are able to help with that. If you are looking to smooth out facial lines, then Botox® may be your answer.

40-50s

As you get older, your skin on your face may begin to shift and sag. Often times, these problems areas could be corrected with simple procedures such as a mini facelift, blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, brow lift, Botox® or fillers. You may notice that small problem areas on your face are hindering your self-confidence. It may be time to consider a facelift, but a consultation with your surgeon will open other options for your facial transformation. At this age, you are in the best position to receive the most optimal results from a facelift.

60+

Many men and women delay getting a facelift until their 60’s or 70’s. While you are more likely to see the best results in your mid-40’s, facelifts are still an option at 60+. As you age, permanent lines and wrinkles set in and the longer that you wait to get a facelift, the harder it will be to hide and diminish these lines.

What are the Benefits of a Facelift?

A facelift is beneficial to both men and women. This procedure comes with several benefits that improve the tightness and appearance of your skin. During the procedure, your surgeon will remove excess facial skin and fat and reshape the lower half of your face. A facelift is designed to tighten hanging or sagging skin, define your jawline, reduced the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and tighten the skin around the nose and mouth.

Can a Facelift be Combined with Other Procedures?

Yes. After the healing from your facelift is complete, you may revisit your plastic surgeon and consider other skin treatments. It is common to see many patients combine a facelift with other minor procedures such as a rhinoplasty or blepharoplasty. Many patients also consider dermal filler and injectables or Botox® to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on their forehead, near their eyebrows or crow’s feet.

Are you considering a facelift? Contact Dr. Beam today to schedule a consultation. Your unique and personalized consultation will determine if a facelift is the best option for you.

Loose Skin Solutions in Glastonbury, CT

Tummy Tuck in Glastonbury, CT

Tummy Tuck in Glastonbury, CTLoose skin can be incredibly frustrating for those who experience it. Whether you find yourself with loose skin as a result of aging, pregnancy, or a successful weight loss regimen, you can easily become discouraged. Sagging skin and fatty deposits often do not respond to diet and exercise, and it can be a real problem for your self-image. Luckily, there are options available for those with troublesome loose skin in the Hartford area.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is a procedure that is designed to sculpt your midsection for a flatter, slimmer waistline. During the procedure, Dr. Beam will make a gently curved incision horizontally along the lower abdomen. The length of the scar depends on how much excess skin needs to be removed. Through this incision, excessive fat is removed and the underlying muscles are tightened. The excess skin is then removed. The result is a trimmer, more sculpted waistline.

Liposuction

Liposuction has long been one of the most utilized procedures for people who desire a trimmer silhouette in certain areas. During liposuction, the area is injected with a solution that will loosen the fat cells and numb the area. A hollow needle is then inserted and suction is utilized to remove the fat. At times, patients will often combine liposuction with a tummy tuck for a more comprehensive result.

CoolSculpting®

For a non-surgical option, CoolSculpting® is an FDA-approved treatment that freezes away stubborn fat deposits. Targeting only fat cells, CoolSculpting® involves no incisions, no injections, and no anesthetics. The procedure involves clamping a section of fat and freezing it from outside the body. Once the cells have been treated, your body will naturally eliminate the frozen, dead cells. This procedure is performed in the office, typically it requires more than one treatment.

Three Facelift Facts Glastonbury Residents Should Know

Facelift in Glastonbury, CT

Facelift in Glastonbury, CTAging affects us all differently, but no matter what, gravity plays a role. As time goes on, our faces can lose volume and start to sag. It is possible to delay these effects utilizing dermal fillers and injectables, but at a certain point, you may start considering a more permanent option, such as a facelift.

One of the most common and trusted procedures, a facelift is a great way to take years off of your appearance. Before deciding if a facelift is right for you, consider these three important facts.

  1. It’s Not All in the Skin

A facelift isn’t just about stretching and tightening the skin on your face. While this plays a big part, care is also given to lifting and tightening the muscles, and reshaping the contours of the face before draping and securing the skin. This assures a more vibrant, youthful, and natural-looking result.

  1. Recovery is Less Painful than Perceived

Considering how often you use your face and how invasive the procedure is, it’s easy to imagine that the recovery from a facelift procedure would be quite painful and drawn out. The truth is, many patients are surprised at the low levels of pain they feel. Most people only require pain meds for the first two days. Day three is often the worst for swelling and tightness, but by day five, the majority of these symptoms will have subsided, and you will be on the road to recovery.

  1. Lasting Results

While aging carries a different look for all of us, some things are universal. Unlike with certain other procedures, the results of a successful facelift are likely to last indefinitely. Many patients report enjoying their improved appearances for the rest of their lives.

To find out if a facelift is right for you, contact us for more information or to schedule a consultation. Dr. Beam serves the Glastonbury and Hartford, Connecticut areas.

Glastonbury Residents Ask: What are the Best Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers & Injectables in Glastonbury, CT

Dermal Fillers & Injectables in Glastonbury, CTDermal fillers and injectables are a great way to give your face a boost with minimal time commitment and little to no downtime. Whether you want to treat wrinkles or restore lost volume, all it takes is a quick and easy visit to the office and you will be back out enjoying your day in no time! In most cases, no one will even be able to tell that you got anything done. It’s that easy.

Below are some of the best dermal fillers available at our Hartford, Connecticut area offices.

Botox®

Botox® is an injectable neurotoxin that works to reduce the appearance of stress and age-related wrinkles. Repetitive movements in the face can cause these wrinkles, and Botox® works to halt these muscle actions for a smoother, more youthful appearance. Approved by the FDA, and completely safe for cosmetic use, the results of Botox® last for about six months and treatments can be repeated as necessary in order to maintain the desired look.

Juvederm®

As we age, our body slows the production of certain chemicals, leading to a loss of volume, which can increase the likelihood of wrinkles forming. Juvederm® is comprised mostly of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring chemical that hydrates and plumps by boosting skin’s moisture, volume, and elasticity. Juvederm® hydrates and volumizes the area around the injection site for a more vibrant appearance.

Restylane®

Restylane® is an FDA-approved dermal filler that fills in and diminishes severe lines around the mouth. The injectable gel contains hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that our bodies produce less of as we age. This product adds volume and boosts moisture production for a smoother complexion and fuller lips.

Radiesse®

Radiesse® is formulated to treat more severe lines, wrinkles, and folds on the face. This is accomplished by injecting calcium-based microspheres that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. Radiesse® is injected deeper into the skin and is particularly suited to treat marionette lines, nasolabial folds, and creases around the chin that can give one a dour and aged expression.
