Inverted Nipple Correction

Inverted nipples are nipples that are pulled inward instead of pointing outward. From interfering with the aesthetic balance of the breasts to creating difficulties in breastfeeding, inverted nipples can be a source of frustration. About 10 to 20% of women experience various degrees of inverted nipples.

How can I tell if I have nipple inversion and what grade I am?

It is normal for the nipples to protrude 5 to 10 millimeters (roughly the size of a ladybug) at any given time, with more protrusion occurring in colder temperatures or during arousal. Normal nipple protrusion is when the nipple has some projection, regardless of size. Grade 1–3 inversion is then determined by how well the nipple stays out after being pulled out.

Can the procedure be done in office?

Yes, the procedure can be done in office using local anesthesia. If you are planning a breast procedure in an outpatient setting, the inverted nipple repair can often be done at the same time.

What causes an inverted nipple?

Inverted nipples usually occur because the underlying ligaments and milk ducts are too tight or short, pulling the nipple inward and creating a flat or concave nipple. Some people are born with this condition, while others can develop it later in life due to changes in breast tissue such as mastitis, breast cancer, or sagging breasts.

If you believe you have inverted nipples, they can be corrected to make them protrude outward. The degree of inversion depends on the success of the procedure, which will be discussed with you at the time of your consultation.

How is the procedure performed?

The inverted nipple repair procedure is performed through a small incision at the base of the nipple, and the tethered tissue is released. Usually, an internal suture is placed to prevent re-inversion and improve the shape of the nipple. The area is then dressed with bandages that do not apply pressure to the nipple.

What results can I expect after the correction?

The visible results are generally permanent and noticeable immediately after the procedure.

Nipple sensation after the correction varies from patient to patient. Some patients experience no change in sensation, while others report increased or decreased sensation long-term.

It’s important to note that results can vary based on the degree of nipple inversion, goals for the procedure, and the individual’s healing process.
