In adolescent boys, this condition is relatively common and typically resolves by itself. For those whom the condition remains a more permanent concern, however, gynecomastia can cause the development of body image issues and feelings of low self esteem. For these men, male breast reduction may provide a solution. Technically known as reduction mammaplasty, male breast reduction is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin to produce a firmer, flatter, more masculine chest contour.

What Are my Options for Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

There are several different approaches to male breast reduction surgery, depending on the severity and source of the gynecomastia. If the condition is primarily the result of an excess of fatty tissue, our Glastonbury cosmetic surgeon may elect to correct the problem primarily with a liposuction procedure. In this case, he would insert a small cannula, or thin hollow tube, through small incisions, loosening the fatty tissue so it may be suctioned and removed from the body.

On the other hand, if an excess of glandular tissue has caused the development of gynecomastia, Dr. Beam may use an excision technique. Dr. Beam can also reposition the nipple and reduce the areola, if sagging and enlargement have occurred as a result of the gynecomastia.
